"Not a Done Deal…"

“A Very, Very Active Investigation”

Last Tuesday, August 11, DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier participated in her regularly scheduled  Newschannel8 program “One-on-One.”

Lanier

She was on hand to discuss the recent drop in crime and status of outstanding cases, and near the end of the hour, one murder case in particular came up.

This is the transcript of the brief exchange:

Q:  Any updates on the Robert Wone murder case on Swann Street; that is one that is going without  murder charge as of yet also.  An attorney who was found killed inside the row home in northwest on Swann Street.  We have three charges, three, charges in court for obstruction of justice, any chance we’ll have murder charges down the line?

A: Well, as far as the charges that have already been placed, those are heading to the justice system, those will be dealt with in court.  In terms of the homicide investigation, since it is a very active ongoing investigation I can’t comment on the details of what has happened in terms of investigative work.  But I will say it is still a very, very active investigation.

Q: So that is not a done deal.

A: Not a done deal by any means.

We’re unable to embed or capture the video but it can be viewed here.   Fast forward to the 4:50 mark on the stream as News8 host Jenifer Donelan asks the Chief  about the status of the Wone murder.

This is the second time the chief has been asked about the Robert Wone investigation in as many weeks. The first time we got one “very” active, the second time we got “very, very” active. Will we see “very, very, very” on the third ask?

Very, very interesting. Let’s hope that Craig’s translation of “very active” as “stuck” does not mean, therefore, that “very, very active” is the equivalent of “very stuck.” I like Bea’s more optimistic interpretation: if that is the real deal, if “not the done deal,” then a “terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day” may be in store for a certain author of children’s literature and his overbearing patron.

Remember Hitchcock’s “Rear Window” when you drive around back and check “the intruder’s route” …
