The Fault, Dear Brutus, is Not in our Stars…
It wouldn’t be until Friday, August 4th 2006, that the Washington Post had a news story on Robert’s murder. While no clues can be garnered from earlier editions of the paper, there is no shortage of context.
The Post’s headlines of August 2, 2006, the day of the murder told of a crushing heat wave gripping the area. The Style section had this:
VERY HOT CONTINENTAL AIR MASS FROM THE PLAINS WILL CONTINUE TO BUILD SLOWLY TO THE EAST . . . EXPECT CONDITIONS TO BE HOT. DAMN HOT. JUNGLE HOT.
Elsewhere in the paper was a piece on a suburban Virginia man convicted of taking too much Ambien, getting behind the wheel of his car then causing a crash that severely maimed a woman. The Metro section sidebar story offered this headline: “Ambien’s More Unusual Side Effects.”
But it was the August 2nd horoscopes published in the Post that provides us the irony and in some instances the ominous foreshadowing of what was in store for later that evening.
