Very little was known about Robert’s murder when the first news item was filed, 17 hours later by WTOP, DC’s all news radio station.

To be more specific, very little was known by those not in the house at the time of Robert’s slaying.  Other details would emerge in the weeks, months and years that followed.

Virginia Man Found Murdered in D.C.

WASHINGTON — A lawyer for a Washington nonprofit was stabbed to death in Northwest Washington Wednesday night, police said.

Robert Wone, 32, of Oakton, Va., was found inside a home suffering from apparent multiple stab wounds.  He was pronounced dead at Washington Hospital Center.  Police are still investigating the case and have not released any additional details about the case.

Wone was the general counsel for Radio Free Asia, which broadcasts news to Asian countries that don’t have free media.  Before coming to Radio Free Asia, Wone had worked at the law firm Covington & Burling.

“We are devastated,” said Radio Free Asia communications director Sarah Jackson-Han, who added that Wone had only been with the corporation for about a month.  “He was a terrific guy.”

Police are offering a $25,000 reward for his killer’s arrest and conviction.

“Police are still investigating,” we were told three years ago.

Last night, MPD chief Cathy Lanier told reporters that “the investigation is still very active.”

If nothing else, the MPD remains on-message.

Perhaps this Thursday, if she does her regularly scheduled “Ask the Chief” program on WTOP, we can find out just how active this investigation really is.

More Questions: Is it unusual that the home and its residents were not identified in the first news report on the radio? Or, was the slow trickle of details a conscious part of the police strategy of “active investigation?” Or, did the station only have time for what little they reported?

To me, if the police were really worried about a deadly intruder on the loose, then the home and street would have been released immediately to the news media to prevent another fatal home invasion. That further confirms that no one apparently bought the proffered intruder theory from day one, except maybe for Victor.
