Sweeps Week

From The WMRW-TV News  Archive…  Film at 11

While the value of the Updike-Steadman issue of New Yorker magazine remains a topic for debate, evidence from the murder scene has been presented in other ways; notably spelled out in various court documents and in this instance, from the images seen in TV news reporting.

WJLA’s Maureen Bunyan has a number of cameo appearances in this case.  An early affidavit describes a Swann Street neighbor hearing a scream emanate from 1509. Unsure of exactly when it occurred, all the witness remembered was that it must have happened between 11:00pm and 11:30pm, when Maureen was on the air anchoring their evening newscast.

While digging through the video archive of coverage we came across this piece filed last November 21st, anchored by Bunyan, that detailed Price’s and Zaborsky’s DC Superior Court appearance that ultimately placed them under “high intensity supervision” e.g. ankle bracelets and electronic monitoring.

This newscast offers a rare glimpse inside 1509 and shows among other things images of Robert’s death bed and the supposed murder weapon sitting on the adjacent night stand.   Judge for yourself if the few blood traces shown on the 1509 guest room bed are consistent with what one would expect from a victim who suffered two stab wounds to the chest and one to the abdomen.  Viewer discretion is advised.

It’s our hope that this seasoned newswoman stays on the desk long enough to report on the outcomes of both the criminal and civil trials.

Exactly. If the murder had been the work of an intruder, blood would have been everywhere. On the pillow, sheets, sofabed, floor, wherever. No wonder the EMT said the hair on the back of his neck stood up as he approached Wone’s lifeless body. Everything appeared too nicely set-up and tidy. I would love to hear theories from people who believe someone other than the three residents committed this horrible crime.

She did it,

I agree!! Victor looked like he was ready to spill his guts in the ABC 7 clip. I give him one night in a cell with a big ‘ole thug… I bet he flips on the others fast.

IKWDI,

do you really think the proper, adult response is anything like what you wrote? Wishing senseless violence upon somebody? This whole issue is becoming too much of a bitch fest/blood sport for some of the authors and many of the commentators on this blog. I wish one of the moderators would provide a litlle shepherding to keep the eye on the prize — i.e., helping people keep informed on facts and well-thought-out — rather than blood-thirsty — observations/theories. Sometimes I read some of the postings on this blog and suddenly feel like I’m glancing among a titillated, rowdy, blood-craving crowd of tricoteuses.

My apologies to all for my prior post. I should have policed my words more closely and chosen better language. My sincere apologies to the editors and the readers. What I was trying to convey was just the notion that oftentimes it takes external pressures (indictments, loss of freedom, etc.) to encourage a wrongdoer or co-conspirator to confess their crimes…

Speaking of policing my posts… I should also read the name field more closely 🙂

Hey guys – We read you loud and clear. We’re removed a couple oddball and inappropriate posts over the last week or two and we remain ever vigilant. Personally, i found IKWDI within bounds here since he was just sharing common jailhouse cliches. My colleagues may differ and it’s apparent some readers do as well. But as I watch the ebb and flow of posting and comments I would tend to give wider berth to those who have a proven track record of adding to both the discussion and dynamic, and to me IKWDI fits the bill.

We opted for auto-posting comments rather than reviewing them and posting later. Inherent risks will always be associated with that. A comment from yesterday suggested expanding replies within the threads. I found that switch and flipped it. We’re taking all of your thoughtful suggestions and trying to turn them around as quick as we can.

My request to anon(s) – Adopt a nom de guerre so we and others can follow the conversation and your points better. Even if YOU are the anon that flamed the crap out of my colleague earlier this week. Consider this your make-up sex.

Lastly, we welcome unilateral discussions on any topic, tip or post, past or future. Take advantage of the contact email so we can be more responsive and nimble in hearing your thoughts and in managing this beast over the next several months.

Maureen hasn’t been at WJLA since 1978; she’s been there since 1999. The article said, “Bunyan, who has been an anchor on local stations since 1978, has been co-anchor on WJLA’s late news for the past 10 years.”

She was on the channel 9 news (WUSA) for decades before that.

When one alleged offender, co-conspirator or prospective defendant informs on another, the prosecutorial term is called: “turning state’s evidence.”

Unfortunately, the above predictions would appear to be wishful thinking in the instance of this case.

As a Gandhian pacifist, I do not wish ill — let alone violence against anybody. Indeed, I view “outing” as a vengeful, vindictive and violent act.

Thus it is just an observation when I wonder why at least Price and Ward — if not Zaborsky — failed to request that they be kept handcuffed and shackled together for BDSM purposes?
